Medical Diagnostic Errors Kill up to 80,000 Americans each Year

According to a study published in the March 11, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, 40,000 to 80,000 Americans are killed every year by healthcare providers who make diagnostic errors – defined as diagnoses that are missed, wrong, or delayed. Although research shows that as many as 1.5 million Americans are killed every year from medication errors, the tort claims from diagnostic errors are nearly twice as common as claims arising from medication errors. The study also pointed out that diagnostic errors are often unrecognized or unreported – Wow! What’s the real death toll?

There is a common sense reason for this very common problem. Many of the conditions that our colleagues are attempting to diagnose and treat are not medical conditions – they are physiologic conditions which do not respond well to the toxic effects of the drugs that are inappropriately used to treat the patient. In fact, we see many patients who suffer from medication toxicity issues that are far more deadly than their primary physiologic condition.
